| 内容記述 | Since it was originally coined by Erikson (1950), the concept of `identity` has been used in different contexts and various academic disciplines. However, Ueno (2005) argues that we should rid ourselves of the concept of `identity`because its modern essentialist assumption is no longer appropriate for a sociological analytic approach. On the other hand, Hall (1996) strongly claims the indispensability of the concept of `identity` even though he shares such critical viewpoints. In light of such discussions, the present study explores the potential validity of the concept of `identity` in order to analyze the contemporary Japanese society. First, I explain why `identity` shoud be reconsidered in the contemporary social condition. Second, I reexamine Ueno's understanding of Erikson's theory of `identity` through his texts. Third, Erikson's original 'ego identity` is compared with Hall's vision of `identity`. Fourth, I demonstrate how several articles in Datsu-Identity (Ueno, 2005) confirm the validity of Hall's and Erikson's concept of `identity` in various contexts of Japanese society. To conclude, some case studies about how people in Japan aspire to achieve their `identity` examplify the validity of the concept of `identity`. |
