Recently, international students finding jobs in Japan after graduation have slightly increased. However, most of the research about career choice is in the form of quantitative surveys, so it is difficult to grasp changes along the time axis and to see the factors that led to their career choices. In this study, eight international students from China who had studied at the same university and department in Japan at the same time participated in interviews aimed at elucidating their career choices. From these interviews, it was found that prospects of future life events; the influence of relatives, acquaintances, and friends; work experience such as part-time work or internships; and various incidental factors impacted job hunting and career choices. In addition, it was suggested that there are not only students who decide to return to their home countries while struggling to find a job, but also students who switch from working in Japan to returning to their home country, before job hunting begins. The research also found that they had difficulty gathering information about jobs after studying abroad for an extended period of time, etc. We hope that the results of the research will be utilized to support and educate international students. |
