Academic research on baseball in the Dominican Republic has generally focused on players who have successfully signed professional contracts with teams in the Major League Baseball. In contrast, this paper relies on fieldwork carried out at a practice ground in the capital, Santo Domingo, to reveal the daily practices of young boys aiming to become professional players, their thoughts on baseball, and their relationships with each other. This study demonstrates that these boys’ daily practices are based on a programa (baseball school). Moreover, each programa has at least one entrenador (coach), and each player has his own jefe (boss). The relationship between these adults and youths are clear and fixed; however, there is a high degree of mobility among both adults and youths in programas, leading to the fluid arrangement of daily practices. In addition, this study reveals that youth players differ in terms of age, birthplace, position, contract, attitudes during practice, and future visions. While the boys generally think of themselves as compañeros (colleagues) rather than amigos (friends), they share things like drinks and snacks daily. Although this sharing is generally but not unconditionally tolerated, it is not without conditions, and the “have nots” need to demonstrate concern for the “haves.” |
