| 内容記述 | This paper aims to examine the ambiguity of the term “great” in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby from the perspective of the “mother” in psychoanalysis. In undertaking such an endeavor, firstly, it focuses on the descriptions in the novel that evoke the “mother” and analyzes them based on psychoanalytic theory to reveal Gatsby’s desire for a “return to the womb”. Secondly, it considers Nick, the very person who evaluates Gatsby as “great”, and points out that Nick exhibits a critical or satirical attitude toward 1920s America (“the Roaring Twenties”), making him an anachronistic figure. By connecting the above analyses of Gatsby and Nick, it concludes that Gatsby’s “immaturity,” characterized by a desire for a “return to the womb” and remaining within the “Oedipus complex,” is interpreted by Nick as an anachronistic nobility that maintains “purity” without being completely consumed by the times, and this leads to the positive evaluation that “Gatsby is great.” However, as long as Gatsby’s “greatness” stems from his “immaturity”, it inevitably accompanies “childishness” or “juvenility,” which is considered one of the manifestations of irony in The Great Gatsby. | |||||||||
